Visual Effects Coordinator Tierra Harris never envisioned that starting her higher education path as a teenager living in Hollywood, Maryland would result in her landing her successful career in Hollywood, California. But today, the 2016 College of Southern Maryland (CSM) alumna fully credits her entry as a dual enrolled student and then full-time student at CSM – and her early studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) – for her ongoing success in the visual effects television and film industry.

CSM Celebrates Opening of New James C. Mitchell Student Resource Center at La Plata Campus

College of Southern Maryland (CSM) staff and students celebrated with Charles County dignitaries on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the ribbon-cutting for a newly renovated James C. Mitchell Student Resource Center (SR Center), which had previously served the Health Technology Building (HT Building) at the La Plata Campus. The SR Center is now open to serve as a welcome center and to provide vital support services in one location for new students and current students to access and interact with CSM’s offices of Admissions, Advising, the Hawk Hub, Counseling Services, Disability Support Services, and the Testing Center.

Early College Students Walk/Run in Recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 3, 2024

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Early College students from Calvert County participated in a breast cancer awareness walk/run around the College of Southern Maryland Prince Frederick Campus on Thursday, Oct. 3. The walk/run promoted exercise, being healthy, and breast cancer awareness. Completing the one-mile leg fastest were Liron Frieson of Calvert High School, Brett Eide of Huntingtown High School, and Genesis Copeland of Huntingtown High School. Finishing the three-mile leg the quickest were Zachary Morgan of Patuxent High School and CSM students Diallo Taylor and Katie Dolan, with an honorable mention going out to Max Kenner of Patuxent High School.

Combs is a three-time graduate of CSM and a previous member of the CSM nursing faculty. The Calvert County resident returns to the college in her new role Oct. 7.

CSM Announces Summer 2024 Dean’s List

September 11, 2024

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has released its dean’s list for the 2024 summer sessions. Students who have earned 12 or more credits at CSM are eligible to be considered for the dean’s list. At the end of the fall, spring, and summer sessions, full- and part-time students who have completed at least six credits during the semester and have earned a term grade point average of 3.5 or better will be included on the dean’s list. Sixteen CSM Students Earn Scholarships from Greater Waldorf Jaycees and CSM Foundation

The Greater Waldorf Jaycees and College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation awarded 16 scholarships to CSM students at a dinner reception and ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The ceremony marked the 25th year that the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Foundation and the CSM Foundation have partnered to award 595 Charles County students more than $1.5 million through a shared scholarship fund.

CSM Hosts Transfer Fairs, Offers Accessible Pathways to Possibilities with 292 Transfer Agreements to Four-Year Institutions

In recent months, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) finalized 15 new transfer pathways with West Virginia University – so CSM can now boast that the college offers nearly 300 articulation agreements with 71 different transfer partners. This means that CSM students who meet certain criteria are given priority enrollment or guaranteed access to four-year colleges and universities worldwide.

Brown announced several appointments July 31 to the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention to include the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Director of Educational Partnership Sylvia Royster. A resident of Charles County, Royster has also been an advocate for Native-American/Alaskan Native students and families as a classroom teacher, administrator, and recently the Title VI Indian Education Grant Director for Charles County Public Schools.

CSM Travel Study Students Put Education into Action to Aid Horseshoe Crab Conservation Efforts

It’s a cycle that has existed each spring for millions of years: as dusk falls along the Delaware Bay, thousands of horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay their eggs, which then become food for migrating birds. And on a night this past May, a group of students and faculty from College of Southern Maryland (CSM) traveled to Cape May, New Jersey to help tag the “living fossils” for scientific research.

As a 68-year-old retiree attending the College of Southern Maryland, going to college with Generation Z was a new and challenging experience in my life, since I am a Baby Boomer. The Veterans Lounge is an area where I could come to campus early and study for class before it started during the day or evening. It is a place for making a connection with other veterans and acknowledging that we are not alone. There are other veterans like us who are going through similar experiences, overcoming obstacles, embracing positive outcomes for hospitalization and rehabilitation, and finding pathways through their lives today.

Teams Compete for $$ to Develop AI that Assists the Warfighter During Velocity Center’s 4th Hackathon

Top minds and innovative thinkers recently competed for $12,000 in cash prizes during the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Velocity Center’s fourth annual VelocityX Hackathon – a challenge that required competitors to create Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist U.S. defense systems against enemy aircraft. Sponsored in partnership with the CSM Velocity Center and the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), the event saw seven teams battle it out to develop a winning AI-enabled aircraft detection software that supports a Navy-inspired mission.

Family, friends, retired Navy personnel, community partners and College of Southern Maryland (CSM) faculty, staff, and students, recently gathered for a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the naming of the Barbara Ives Cyber Lab at the college’s Leonardtown Campus. The event recognized the many accomplishments of the long-time southern Maryland resident and retired U.S. Navy Reserve captain who is widely known for her impeccable service to the country, southern Maryland, and academia – including her years working for CSM.

CSM Students Travel to Annapolis, Advocate to Keep Community Colleges Affordable and Accessible for All

First-year College of Southern Maryland (CSM) student Denzel Chance travelled to Annapolis today to testify before the Maryland House of Delegates Appropriations Committee in support of House Bill (HB) 0607 – a bill that if passed would make it easier for students pursuing noncredit workforce certificates, licensures, or apprenticeship programs to receive the Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship. It is the second time in two weeks that Chance, who is a Promise Scholarship recipient himself, visited Annapolis to meet with his representatives, share his CSM story, and support fellow students.

CSM and Community Celebrate Engineers Week, Extend “Welcome to the Future”

“Welcome to the Future” is the theme for 2024 National Engineers Week, or E-Week, which runs through Feb. 25 and is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers. This month, local county governments again joined in the efforts to recognize E-week and the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), where the next generation of engineers can affordably access engineering programs that will help launch their STEM careers and meet the needs of tomorrow's workforce.
