CSM Celebrates its 2025 Health Career Readiness Graduates
January 21, 2025College of Southern Maryland (CSM) students who have chosen to pursue careers in health care were lauded and celebrated Jan. 16 during the college’s Health Career Readiness Recognition in La Plata. Ninety-six students were recognized for completing programs to become certified nursing assistants, geriatric nursing assistants, dental assistants, phlebotomy technicians, certified clinical medical assistants, paramedics, certified nutrition coaches, and certified personal trainers.
CSM Closes Jan. 20 in Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Welcomes Students for First Day of Spring Semester Jan. 21
January 17, 2025The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will close for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 and will resume normal operating hours Jan. 21 when the college welcomes back its CSM Hawks to the first day of the Spring semester. CSM Announces Fall 2024 Dean's List
January 12, 2025The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has released its dean’s list for the 2024 fall session. Students who have earned 12 or more credits at CSM are eligible to be considered for the dean’s list. At the end of the fall, spring, and summer sessions, full- and part-time time students who have completed at least six credits during the semester and have earned a term grade point average of 3.5 or better will be included in the dean’s list. CSM Closes All Campuses Saturday, Jan. 11; Bethesda Arts Trio Performance Canceled
January 10, 2025Due to impending winter weather, College of Southern Maryland (CSM) campuses and instructional sites will be closed Saturday, Jan. 11. December 17, 2024College of Southern Maryland (CSM) alumna Laura Lopez McNulty’s (‘24) spent much of her last three years at CSM eloquently lifting her voice with elected officials to share how community college students benefit from expanding access to education; creating support systems to bolster a learner’s momentum; and, building partnerships that ensure economic and social mobility. CSM Celebrates Opening of New James C. Mitchell Student Resource Center at La Plata Campus
October 14, 2024College of Southern Maryland (CSM) staff and students celebrated with Charles County dignitaries on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the ribbon-cutting for a newly renovated James C. Mitchell Student Resource Center (SR Center), which had previously served the Health Technology Building (HT Building) at the La Plata Campus. The SR Center is now open to serve as a welcome center and to provide vital support services in one location for new students and current students to access and interact with CSM’s offices of Admissions, Advising, the Hawk Hub, Counseling Services, Disability Support Services, and the Testing Center.
CSM’s Cybersecurity Associate Degree Program Ranks in the Top 10 Nationwide for 2025

Early College Students Walk/Run in Recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October 3, 2024In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Early College students from Calvert County participated in a breast cancer awareness walk/run around the College of Southern Maryland Prince Frederick Campus on Thursday, Oct. 3. The walk/run promoted exercise, being healthy, and breast cancer awareness. Completing the one-mile leg fastest were Liron Frieson of Calvert High School, Brett Eide of Huntingtown High School, and Genesis Copeland of Huntingtown High School. Finishing the three-mile leg the quickest were Zachary Morgan of Patuxent High School and CSM students Diallo Taylor and Katie Dolan, with an honorable mention going out to Max Kenner of Patuxent High School.
CSM’s Global Initiative Committee Invites Public to Learn About Nepalese Food, Music, and Culture Oct. 10
October 2, 2024The College of Southern Maryland’s Global Initiatives Committee invites students, staff, faculty, and the Southern Maryland community to attend the Nepalese Cultural Educational Panel and पर्व Parva (Celebration) Oct. 10 at the CSM La Plata Campus or via Zoom. The free event will include folk music, Nepali cultural gastronomy, and a panel discussion on “Cultural literacy and identity of Nepali diaspora in the U.S.”
CSM Alumna Dr. Caroline Holland Combs Returns as Dean of the College's School of Health Sciences
September 26, 2024The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announces the appointment of Dr. Caroline Holland Combs, DNP, MSN, RN as the college’s new dean of the School of Health Sciences after an extended national search process. Combs is a three-time graduate of CSM and a previous member of the CSM nursing faculty. The Calvert County resident returns to the college in her new role Oct. 7.

Sixteen CSM Students Earn Scholarships from Greater Waldorf Jaycees and CSM Foundation
September 10, 2024The Greater Waldorf Jaycees and College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation awarded 16 scholarships to CSM students at a dinner reception and ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The ceremony marked the 25th year that the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Foundation and the CSM Foundation have partnered to award 595 Charles County students more than $1.5 million through a shared scholarship fund.

August 5, 2024Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced several appointments July 31 to the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention to include the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Director of Educational Partnership Sylvia Royster. A resident of Charles County, Royster has also been an advocate for Native-American/Alaskan Native students and families as a classroom teacher, administrator, and recently the Title VI Indian Education Grant Director for Charles County Public Schools.

CSM Travel Study Students Put Education into Action to Aid Horseshoe Crab Conservation Efforts
July 25, 2024It’s a cycle that has existed each spring for millions of years: as dusk falls along the Delaware Bay, thousands of horseshoe crabs come ashore to lay their eggs, which then become food for migrating birds. CTE Students Visit CSM for Hands-on College Experiences
July 22, 2024Charles County middle school students visit College of Southern Maryland (CSM) La Plata and Regional Hughesville campuses as part of the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Career and Technology Education (CTE) Summer Camps for rising seventh and eighth graders. This CCPS and CSM partnership allows students to explore career avenues and college choices as they plan their high school class schedules and career pathways. Students took part in hands-on lessons and field trips facilitated by CSM staff and faculty as part of the experience.

CSM Students Travel to Annapolis, Advocate to Keep Community Colleges Affordable and Accessible for All
February 20, 2024First-year College of Southern Maryland (CSM) student Denzel Chance travelled to Annapolis today to testify before the Maryland House of Delegates Appropriations Committee in support of House Bill (HB) 0607 – a bill that if passed would make it easier for students pursuing noncredit workforce certificates, licensures, or apprenticeship programs to receive the Maryland Community College Promise Scholarship. It is the second time in two weeks that Chance, who is a Promise Scholarship recipient himself, visited Annapolis to meet with his representatives, share his CSM story, and support fellow students.

Price will join the CSM team Jan. 29, 2024 and in his role, will manage the college’s department of Human Resources (HR) and the department of Organizational Development, Talent, and Equity.

In some courses, that might mean getting hands-on experience with technology or budgets. In the forensics classes taught by St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) Crime Lab Supervisor and CSM Criminal Justice Adjunct Instructor Megan Roberts '05, it means students spend a semester gathering evidence and investigating stab wounds and blood spatters.
