Administrative Assistants provide support by conducting research, preparing statistical reports, handling information requests, and performing clerical functions such as preparing correspondence, receiving visitors, arranging conference calls, and scheduling meetings. Students may also train and supervise lower-level clerical staff.

Bookkeeping is a branch of accounting responsible for recording the financial transactions and activities of a business. Bookkeepers record these transactions in the book of accounts, maintain supporting summaries and documentation, and produce reports as required. Bookkeepers need to have good planning and organization skills with a strong attention to detail in order to maintain expenditures, payroll, income and tax requirements for a business.

The Business Administration, AS curriculum combines the functional knowledge and skills graduates need in business to perform, with the individual and professional development that enable them to excel.
The program is primarily directed towards students seeking a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Students who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting should also enroll in this program.

Clinical Medical Assistants are a vital part of clinical patient care. They perform tasks including preparing patients for the doctor, obtaining vital signs, collecting specimens (phlebotomy for example), performing EKGs, and assisting during exams and procedures to name a few.
Medical administrative assistant duties may include greeting patients, scheduling appointments, filing insurance claims, and answering incoming calls. Day-to-day office functions are part of a medical administrative assistants’ tasks. Students completing this program are eligible to take the NHA Certified Medical Administrative Assistant exam. Employment opportunities can include: hospitals, urgent care settings, and private physician offices.
CNA/GNAs employed by a long-term care facility with at least one-year of experience may want to obtain Certified Medicine Aide (CMA) certification to obtain greater advancement.
A Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Geriatric Nursing Assistant provides basic patient care under the direction of the nursing staff. A Nursing Assistant performs duties for patients in a healthcare setting, such as feeding, dressing, grooming, moving, and changing linens.
Data and information technology are everywhere, in every aspect of our lives. But when technical issues cause life to grind to a halt, it’s the tech wizards in Cloud and Information Technology that get it moving again.
The Cloud and Information Technology degree is a program designed to provide students with the essential technical and communication skills required for entry-level employment in the vast field of cloud and information technology (IT).
This program includes coursework that will help students to prepare for entry-level CompTIA certification exams in A+ and Network+. Students also prepare for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) exam in Cloud Practitioner. With further study, students may also be prepared for CompTIA Security+ and AWS Solutions Architect certifications.
Learn More About the Cloud and Information Technology ProgramThe Truck Driver Training (Class A) program (29.5 CEUs) at the College of Southern Maryland is designed to provide skilled drivers for the transportation companies in the Southern Maryland area and beyond. We provide quality training with an emphasis on safety, using good equipment, and a small faculty/student ratio.
Become eligible to take the Motor Vehicle Administration Commercial Vehicle License Class B skills test. Training includes: defensive driving certification, railroad and safety belt training, log books, hours of service regulations, map reading and trip planning, skid control and recovery, winter driving, accident procedures, road rage, construction zones, and work safety. On road driving training consists of city, rural, and night driving. Training also includes federal motor carrier safety regulations – entry level driving training.
Students will be prepared to take the Motor Vehicle Administration Class A Commercial Vehicle License skills exam and can earn the following endorsements: general knowledge, air brakes, combination, doubles/triples, tankers and hazardous materials. The course includes defensive driving training and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations required entry-level driver training certificate. This program is a statewide designated program. The Community Health Worker Certification Course aims to provide prospective workers with the essential knowledge, skills, and resources needed to act as a bridge between health, social services, and the community. Its goal is to ensure equitable access to resources and services, addressing the diverse health needs of the community through outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support. and advocacy.
Computer science is an exciting, challenging, and growing field that impacts the world and everyday life in countless ways.
Computer scientists are involved in creating technology and systems that are used in a wide range of industries, including medicine, communications, entertainment, manufacturing, business, and science. CS research pushes the state-of-the-art in computing theory and practice, and it leads to new technologies that change the world, such as the personal computer, the internet, cell phones, social media, and much more, as well as new discoveries in science and engineering, new possibilities for social science and the humanities, and creative collaborations with the arts.

The Criminal Justice program option is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year institution and to complete a bachelor's degree in criminology, criminal justice, or one of the many related fields. It prepares students who plan to ultimately serve the community on a local, state, or national level in the fields of law enforcement, parole and probation, juvenile justice, corrections, or criminal justice research.
These programs enable students to qualify for positions as police, security, or corrections officers and also serves those already in the field who wish to update or advance their skills. They also provide several opportunities for civilian personnel; evidence technician, social worker, substance abuse counselor, child support agency worker, law librarian, etc., and serve as a strong foundation for journalist, politicians, and community leaders.

Every industry using computing systems is awash in data. A scientific approach to analyzing data allows stakeholders to monitor processes and engage in informed decision making.
CSM’s Data Science program is organized around core coursework teaching students to manage, explore, model, and visualize data for descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analysis. This program will provide students with the underlying mathematical and computational foundations, hands-on experience with industry standard statistical and programming tools, as well as exploration of current ethical issues in the field of data science.
This Data Science, AS program is designed for transfer to four-year institutions requiring mathematical, computer science, information technology and data science preparation.

On a typical day, a dental assistant who delivers patient care will: make patients as comfortable as possible in the dental chair, prepare them for treatment, and obtain dental records; hand instruments and materials to dentists; sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, prepare tray setups for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care; and much more. With further education, students can become Registered Dental Hygienists who clean teeth and examine oral areas.
CSM offers the required training necessary to become a licensed Driver Education Instructor in Maryland through the Motor Vehicle Administration.
Explore essential courses designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to foster the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of children from birth through adolescence. Our curriculum covers foundational theories, effective teaching strategies, curriculum planning, and the best practices in early childhood education. These classes meet the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements, preparing you for roles as childcare teachers, directors, and infant-toddler caregivers.
The need for qualified child care providers in Southern Maryland is growing was the region expands.
Students completing this degree program have the skills necessary to become the owner of a child care center, a program director for a child care center with more than 40 children, or a in a child care center.

CSM’s Emergency Medical Services Associate of Applied Science degree program prepares graduates to provide this critical emergency pre-hospital medical care to those who have sustained potentially life-threatening illnesses and injuries.
Completion of CSM’s Paramedic Certificate program qualifies graduates to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (NREMT-P) examinations. This course prepares competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels. Instruction includes classroom, laboratory, and clinical training in a variety of pre-hospital and hospital settings.
This program follows the National Education Guidelines developed by the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Graduates are employed in settings associated with emergent patient care such as hospitals, emergency and urgent care centers, fire and rescue squads, ambulance services and agencies, and similar organizations. A major objective of CSM’s practicum experience is to apply classroom theory to the work environment.

The Engineering, AS degree is designed for students planning to transfer to a Bachelor of Science program in mechanical, aerospace, chemical, or civil engineering (as well as other engineering disciplines). Students take a set of core courses and choose electives appropriate for their specific discipline: mechanical, aerospace, electrical, chemical, or civil engineering. Upon completing the engineering curriculum, students may transfer to a Bachelor of Science degree program in engineering.

The first semester is the same for all students in this program. The first semester is designed to provide all students with a firm foundation for the study of engineering technology. After the first semester, students select an area of concentration from one of the following fields: Drafting, Electronics, or Robotics.

The fire science technology program prepares graduates to function as entry-level, fire service personnel and provides the degree associated with advancement within the fire service for career personnel currently employed as firefighters. Employment opportunities include positions as firefighters, fire officers, fire prevention officers, code enforcement officers, fire rangers, and crash and rescue technicians.
This program is a partnership between the College of Southern Maryland, which provides the general education courses, and Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI), which provides the technical courses at sites in Southern Maryland. Credits for MFRI courses will be transferred into the college based upon the recommendation of the American Council on Education as published in the current edition of the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs.

This broad-based liberal arts curriculum is ideal for recent high school graduates or returning students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree.
Learn More About the General Studies ProgramCSM’s Health Information Management program offers students two paths of study: the Medical Coding Certificate and an associate degree in Health Information Management. Students don’t have to choose one option or the other; the course of study is continuous. The coursework that graduates complete to earn the Medical Coding Certificate fulfills requirements for the Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Management. Conversely, students in the study track for the associate degree will earn their Medical Coding Certificate as part of their program, with no additional courses required.
Graduates of the Medical Coding Certificate track are prepared to sit for the Certified Coding Associate exam, while the associate degree track prepares graduates for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam.
Learn More About the Health Information Management and Medical Coding ProgramHeating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Helpers learn to perform tasks supporting Master HVAC Mechanics and do preparatory work for the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems and equipment. A HVAC Mechanic installs new heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system units and performs maintenance and service repairs for existing units in both residential and commercial properties according to specifications and established safety guidelines.
Home Improvement Contractors repair, renovate, modernize, install, replace, improve, restore, paint, construct, remodel, move, or demolish residential or noncommercial properties. In order to offer home improvement services in the State of Maryland, contractors must be licensed by the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation (DLLR). In order to be eligible for licensing, contractors need to pass a home improvement contractor exam given by DLLR. CSM offers TEC-7560 Maryland Home Improvement License Exam Preparation that prepares you to pass the examination.
A Home Inspector examines residential property and evaluates the condition of the structure, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems and components, electrical system, and appliances.
CSM’s TEC-5670 Home Inspection Training meets the requirements for home inspection pre-licensure for the State of Maryland. Students must also pass a test administered by PSI Examination Services before applying for a Home Inspector license with the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.
The Homeland Security program prepares students for a variety of careers and occupational specialties in federal, state, and local government, as well as the private sector.
Students examine a span of local, national and international issues and operations from terrorism to disaster planning and response. This program emphasizes the importance of balancing the need of society to protect life and property with the need to safeguard individual rights. At the successful completion of the degree, students are well prepared for entry-level employment or promotional opportunity.

Students will take the foundational 1st and 2nd year courses in music theory and ear training, music history, and can choose to participate in a variety of music ensembles such as band, chorale, chamber choir, barbershop chorus, and Latin ensemble. The music ensembles consist of CSM students and community participants. Electives include private lessons and music history electives such as jazz, rock music, and American music. Students can experience a variety of performing opportunities throughout the year in recitals and concerts.

They monitor the network to ensure there is availability to all system users and may perform necessary maintenance to support network availability.
From cancer to cavities, bone fractures to organ failure, health care professionals specializing in medical imaging play a pivotal role in detection, visualization, diagnosis, and treatment of a vast array of health concerns.
A subspecialty of radiology, nuclear medicine uses small doses of radioactive substances, called nucleotides, to visualize the condition and functioning of organs and tissues.
The Nuclear Medicine Technology program is offered through an articulation agreement with Prince George’s Community College. This is a competitive admissions program, with 25% of total program spots held for CSM students. This is a competitive admissions program. Endorsed by the Maryland Board of Nursing, this Workforce Training Certificate delves into contemporary nursing practices and the shifting dynamics of healthcare delivery. The program's Refresher Courses aim to bolster the knowledge and skills of nurses re-entering various levels of nursing practice, ensuring their competence and readiness.
The college has been offering the Associate Degree in Nursing for 30+ years and the Practical Nursing Certificate for 40+ years. These courses are offered at the state-of-the-art Center for Health Sciences at the Regional Hughesville Campus.
During their nursing program, students participate in class activities, clinical experiences, and in-lab experiences. Program graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or for the Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN).
CSM offers courses in environmental protection and occupational health and safety to help you prevent unnecessary incidents.
Develop, refresh, or update your skills in Microsoft Word and Excel. There are also comprehensive courses in Word and Excel that teach basic, intermediate, and advanced skills while preparing you for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in each of those applications.
Law firms rely on trained paralegals to handle day-to-day operations such as preparing legal correspondence, summonses, motions, and subpoenas. Our legal courses are offered completely online and in partnership with CLS by Barbri.
This program is a series of three highly engaging and interactive courses which prepare Certified Nursing Assistants working in a hospital setting to perform/deliver additional patient care tasks.
This certificate program prepares pharmacy technicians to work under the direction of a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians stock and inventory prescription and over-the-counter medications; maintain written or computerized patient medication records; count or pour medications into dispensing containers; prepare sterile intravenous medications; type prescription labels, prepare insurance claim forms; and provide direct customer service. Pharmacy technicians work in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, home healthcare pharmacies, nursing home pharmacies, clinic pharmacies, nuclear medicine pharmacies, and in mail order prescription pharmacies, and other practice settings.
Learn More About the Pharmacy Technician ProgramThe Phlebotomy Technician works in a healthcare setting such as a hospital, clinic, or patient service center in an outpatient laboratory and draws blood from patients or donors for analysis or other medical purposes. With further training, a technician can become a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist which prepares specimens, operates analyzers, and performs manual tests.
Healing the human body after an illness or injury is a process. The care a patient receives during recovery has tremendous implications for their immediate health and overall long-term well-being. Physical therapist assistants not only provide direct treatment; they accompany their patient and the patients’ social and medical support networks on the journey to recovery.
This program prepares the student to provide physical therapist assistant services according to the plan of care developed by the physical therapist. The physical therapist assistant administers direct patient care; teaches patients, families, and other healthcare providers how to perform selected procedures; and provides desired psychosocial support to patients and their families. Physical therapist assistants are employed primarily in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice, extended care facilities, and home healthcare settings. Graduates are eligible to take the national licensing examination.
This program is sponsored by the Chesapeake Area Consortium for Higher Education (CACHE), which is comprised of the College of Southern Maryland, Chesapeake College, and Anne Arundel Community College. The Psychology, AA program is designed to prepare graduates to transfer to psychology and social sciences-related programs at the bachelor's degree level.
The coursework within the program helps students describe the major theoretical perspectives and concepts in psychology. Additionally, students analyze psychological phenomena through the lens of research design principles in psychology. Furthermore, throughout the curriculum, students apply ethical standards related to psychological research and practice, apply psychological principles and practices to everyday life, and analyze the influence of social and cultural variables on behavior and mental processes.

Modern radiographers use a host of x-ray techniques to produce these images.
The College of Southern Maryland has two partners that allow students to pursue certifications in Radiography: Prince George's Community College and Johns Hopkins Hospital Schools of Medical Imaging.

Agents perform duties such as studying property listings, interviewing prospective clients, accompanying clients to property sites, discussing conditions of sale, and drawing up real estate contracts. Training includes agents who represent buyers. CSM can prepare you to sit for the Maryland Real Estate Salesperson Licensing Exam.
Respiratory therapists play a pivotal role in pulmonary and respiratory health, providing patients experiencing breathing problems with care that saves and improves lives. Patients in their care may suffer from a diverse array of health conditions, from the everyday to the extraordinary, like asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, bronchitis, COVID-19, lung cancer, or cystic fibrosis. Whatever the underlying cause, the respiratory therapists’ treatment is no less vital to the patient’s wellbeing and quality of life.
The Respiratory Therapy, AAS program is offered through a partnership with Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). This is a competitive admissions program. First consideration will be given to residents of CSM's service area (Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's counties).
Learn More About the Respiratory Therapy ProgramHands-on labs allow students to apply the skills they learn as they diagnose, repair, and rebuild two- and four-stroke engines. Customer service techniques that address competition and building a loyal clientele are introduced. Students successfully completing this program are eligible for employment with businesses that sell and repair or overhaul small engines used to power lawn mowers, chain saws, and related equipment. Some may select to start their own small business repairing small gas engines.
Teacher certification in Maryland requires at least a Bachelor's degree. You can start your preparation at CSM and earn your associate degree before transferring to a four-year school to complete the requirements.
The Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degrees in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education are part of a statewide articulation designed to transfer seamlessly to any public four-year school in Maryland. Private universities and out-of-state universities also accept these degrees.
The AA: Teacher Education: Secondary Education includes all of the core courses as well as introductory teacher education courses and content area courses to prepare students for transfer.
