CSM Associate Professor of English Jesse Gonzalez will explore how colleges seek to expand access, momentum and mobility to the region’s growing Hispanic populations during the June 6 Provocations Faculty Excellence Lecture Series.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) 2024 Faculty Excellence Lecture Series ‘Provocations’ returns June 6 with CSM Associate Professor of English Jesse Gonzalez discussing how colleges seek to expand access, momentum and mobility to the region’s growing Hispanic populations. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Nationally, since 2005, the enrollment of Hispanic students has more than doubled. No longer a population restricted to the Southwest, Chicago, Miami, and New York City, the Hispanic populations in Southern Maryland continue to grow at relatively speedy rates. Gonzalez’s presentation explores what colleges are doing around the nation to welcome and educate the growing Hispanic populations.

From marketing and recruitment to placement, retention, and successful matriculation, colleges are developing programs and initiatives aimed at both increasing student enrollment as well as equitably placing, retaining, and achieving student success for all.

“While I would never blindly advocate a one-glove-fits-all approach, I hope this presentation raises questions and fuels ongoing discussions about CSM’s goals for Southern Maryland’s increasing Hispanic populations,” Gonzalez shared.

‘Provocations’ features CSM faculty offering presentations that provoke thought and ideas. The series is free and open to the public. The June 6 event will be held La Plata Campus, Community Education (CE) Building, Room 101 at 7 p.m.
