CSM Adds Extra Day to Winter Break; Closes Dec. 23 – Jan. 2

College of Southern Maryland (CSM) President Dr. Maureen Murphy announced today during her final holiday message to employees that CSM will close Friday, Dec. 23, 2022, extending employee’s Winter Break an extra day. The announcement follows Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s lead declaring Dec. 23 a state holiday this year.

CSM is Recognized for Having Best Faculty Among Maryland’s Community Colleges

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is included on the Intelligent.com’s list of the Best Community Colleges in Maryland for 2023 and was declared to have the “Best Faculty” in the state. This designation came one week after CSM was named as one of the “Top Online” colleges in Maryland by the same ranking resource. In that separate announcement, Intellingent.com ranked CSM 15th out of 18 college and universities in the state to earn the “Top Online” designation and was the only community college on the list.

CSM Leases St. Charles Children’s Learning Center to Charles County Public Schools for Prekindergarten Programing

November 22, 2022

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will lease its former St. Charles Children’s Learning Center (CLC) to Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) to add additional availability for full-day prekindergarten programing in Charles County. Under the agreement unanimously approved by the CSM Board of Trustees at its Nov. 17 monthly meeting, CCPS will lease the CLC for two years starting Jan. 1, 2023 with an option for two additional years after June 2026.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Yolanda Wilson as the college’s sixth president following an extensive nationwide search. The board voted unanimously in support of Wilson’s appointment during a public meeting held Nov. 3. Wilson will become the first African-American president to lead the college in its 64-year-history.

CSM Honors Professor Carolin McManus Posthumously with Professor Emeritus Title

Beloved College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Professor Carolin McManus was honored posthumously by her colleagues and the CSM Board of Trustees with the title of Professor Emeritus by a unanimous vote during the trustees’ September meeting. McManus died in a tragic underwater diving accident off Newfoundland July 27 while performing research on the SS PLM 27 shipwreck as a member of the Battle of the Atlantic Research and Expedition Group.

Waldorf man receives college degree after experiencing life's ups and downs

Matthew Lohn said his son, Nathan, has always achieved what he’s wanted to achieve, and that was plain to see when Nathan accepted his degree from Southern New Hampshire University in a ceremony Aug. 31 at the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata campus. The framed bachelor’s degree in American history was earned as part of a transfer agreement between the two institutions and was the culmination of a long, 10-year journey for the 36-year-old that began at CSM, took a detour into Iraq, and veered back into Maryland.

CSM Lifts COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements Effective Immediately

August 20, 2022

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Board of Trustees voted Aug. 19, 2022 to lift the college’s current COVID-19 vaccination requirements. The trustees reached this decision based on numerous factors, including the Center for Disease Control (CDC) issuing new federal guidelines loosening virus protocols and erasing the distinction among people based on vaccination status. Also contributing to the board’s decision is that 80 percent of the Southern Maryland population is reported to be vaccinated.

Charles County Government TV (CCGTV) recently broadcast the news that the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is the first Maryland college to have its campuses designated as Bird City Campuses and earn the title “High Flyer” from Bird City Maryland – a program of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership and local arm of the global Bird Friendly Coalition. CSM Board of Trustees Vote to Modify CSM Vaccine Requirement for Students

July 11, 2022

 The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Board of Trustees voted July 11 to modify the college’s current vaccine requirement for students – allowing unvaccinated students to attend Hy-Flex classes, which are taught online and face-to-face simultaneously. Currently, CSM requires vaccinations for most students who are taking classes onsite, and masking is optional, though highly recommended. The change will occur Aug. 1, 2022 to allow time to transition to the Fall Terms.

Calvert County Commissioners Recognize 2022 Nursing Graduates

CSM nursing graduate Kathryn Humphreys was joined by CSM President Dr. Maureen Murphy to proudly accept the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners' proclamation today celebrating CSM’s 2022 spring nursing graduates. Humphreys was one of 17 Calvert County residents in the spring nursing graduation class that saw 69 students become nurses. In addition this spring, CSM also recognized 84 completers in programs to become Certified Nursing and Geriatric Nursing Assistants, Clinical Medical Assistants, Certified Dental Assistants, Phlebotomy Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Nutrition Coaches, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and Health Information management specialists.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will be closed Monday July 4, 2022 in recognition of the Independence Day holiday and will reopen with normal hours July 5. It has come to our attention that there are inconsistencies in some previously published dates for the July 4, 2022 holiday. A calendar incorrectly listed Tuesday, July 5 as a day that the college would be closed. Since the holiday falls on Monday, the college will be closed only on July 4 for Independence Day. The college will reopen during normal hours on July 5. We apologize for any inconvenience. CSM Board of Trustees Appoints Shawn Coates as Board Chair and Sonja Cox as Vice Chair

College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustee Vice Chair Shawn B. Coates will celebrate his grandmother’s birthday today in a very special way. Last night, when the college’s Board of Trustees unanimously confirmed its next top leaders, it appointed Coates of Charles County as chair and Sonja Cox of St. Mary’s County as vice chair. Coates’ appointment follows the footsteps of his grandmother – CSM Trustee Emeritus Veronica Coates, who served as the college’s trustee from 1976 to 1993.

Students recognized for academic achievements in their fields of study during College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) 39th Annual Academic Excellence Awards Reception included a retired Air Force dentist who discovered a passion for sculpture; a member of the CSM Hawks baseball team who is headed for a career as a social studies teacher; a student who helped lead CSM’s robotics team to its ranking as the best community college robotics team in the country; and a professional photographer who had returned to school to study cybersecurity.

CSM Foundation Celebrates Colleagues, Friends, President Murphy with Engraved Bricks at Leonardtown Campus

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation was joined by faculty, staff, and honored guests this spring at the Leonardtown Campus, to honor supporters with engraved bricks laid in remembrance of loved ones, and in celebration of colleagues and friends of the CSM community who serve as the college’s champions. Purchased through the CSM Foundation, proceeds from the sale of the bricks go toward the student success fund.

Congressman Steny Hoyer met with College of Southern Maryland (CSM) leadership and staff to tour the construction of the new Center for Health Sciences at the college’s Regional Hughesville Campus April 19. During a pre-tour briefing, the group discussed how the $500,000 in critical funding Hoyer secured in FY2022 omnibus is being used to upgrade equipment for the new facility’s health education programs.

Nearly 30 Employers to Participate in Tri-County Job and Career Fair April 15

The Spring 2022 Tri-County Job and Career Fair will be held Friday, April 15 at the College of Southern Maryland La Plata Campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Job seekers are encouraged to arrive early, be prepared to ask questions of nearly 30 participating employers and bring ample copies of their resume. CSM Moves to Mask Optional March 8

The College of Southern (CSM) will lift the indoor mask requirement on all campuses and implement a Mask Optional policy March 8. This move is in line with guidance recently issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Governor Hogan, and state and county health departments. The lifting of indoor mask requirements at the county, state and national levels follows significant declines in COVID-19 health metrics.

Charles County Public Schools and CSM Host 5 'Early College' Program Information Nights
