CSM Announces Dean’s List for 2021 Fall Sessions

January 5, 2022

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has released its dean’s list for the 2021 fall sessions. Students who have earned 12 or more credits at CSM are eligible to be considered for the dean’s list. At the end of the fall, spring and summer sessions, full- and part-time students who have completed at least six credits during the semester and have earned a term grade point average of 3.5 or better will be included on the dean’s list. Southern Maryland Delivers More Than $157,000 to CSM Students’ Success During 2021 Giving Tuesday

The numbers are in, and they are pretty impressive. Community members joined College of Southern Maryland (CSM) alumni, faculty and staff to donate $157,551 during this year’s Giving Tuesday – a 24-hour event held Nov. 30. All monies raised during the fundraising campaign champion student success by supporting scholarships, athletics or the Hawk Feeder micro-pantries and Hawk Pantries.

CSM Students Race to Identify Cells in Nation’s First Ever ‘Cell Bowl’

December 21, 2021

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) students at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) recently competed in the first ever “Cell Bowl,” a competition that had students from across the country racing to identify different cells that they will encounter in their medical professions. CSM’s nine-member team achieved rankings as high as second in the nation before ultimately finishing at third place in the Eastern region.

CSM Earns Top National Ranking in Seven Categories, Including #1 in Business Administration Degree Program

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has received top national rankings in a number of categories – including its degree and certificate programs in Business Administration, Administration and Management, IT and Systems Programs, and Accounting. CSM was also listed as one of Maryland’s top community colleges and overall online college. The research firm Intelligent.com based its findings on CSM’s flexibility, faculty, course strength, cost and reputation.

The Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic (CCMA), a non-profit higher education membership association, has selected College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Faculty Senate President and Professor of Communications Dr. Sarah Merranko, as the community college winner of the Alan G. Penczek Service-Learning Faculty Award. The award is presented to a college faculty member for his/her excellence in integrating service-learning into the curriculum as well as for their impact on students and the greater community college community. Additionally, the CCMA award also acknowledges the recipient’s professional leadership and achievements.

Innovative teaching methods and creating an atmosphere of excitement around a career in cybersecurity earned the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Cybersecurity faculty national recognition from the National Cyberwatch Center’s Innovations in Cybersecurity Education program. CSM’s faculty won Best Submission runner-up for their efforts to collaborate with government, industry and students to create a sustainable regional effort to strengthen cybersecurity workforce needs and broaden opportunities for students currently underrepresented in the cybersecurity workforce.

Bricks Placed at CSM’s La Plata Campus Commemorate Loved Ones, Celebrate Colleagues

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation was joined by faculty and staff Oct. 26, to reveal 31 engraved bricks laid in remembrance of loved ones, and in celebration of colleagues and friends of the CSM community who serve as the college’s champions. The bricks were installed along the walkways surrounding the James C. Mitchell Center for Health Technology at the La Plata Campus. Purchased through the CSM Foundation, proceeds from the sale of the bricks go toward the student success fund.

CSM Celebrates Its Healthcare Faculty, Staff, Students, Grads During National Health Education Week

In recognition of National Health Education Week (Oct. 18-22), the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) celebrates its Health Pathway students’, graduates’, staff and faculty members’ hard work and contributions to the region’s healthcare workforce. Encompassing credit degree programs like Nursing, EMS, Medical Lab Technology (MLT), and more, and continuing education workforce training certificates in a variety of specialties like Phlebotomy, CNA/GNA, and ECG/EKG Technicians, the Health Pathway at CSM is a broad swath of medical training for a number of different in-demand careers. Some students start their careers while still in college, some complete two years with CSM and advance their education with certifications at CSM; while medical assistants and phlebotomists can get certified in a matter of weeks or months.

College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is the first Maryland college to have its campuses designated as Bird City Campuses and earn the title “High Flyer” by Bird City Maryland – a program of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership and local arm of the global Bird Friendly Coalition. CSM joins the Town of La Plata, which was named the first Bird City in Maryland in 2020, in committing to help make Southern Maryland a healthy place for birds and people.

Regina Gibbons Joins CSM Family to Lead Women's Softball Team

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Athletics Department announces Regina Gibbons has joined the college as the head coach of the Hawks' softball program. Gibbons brings with her more than 20 years of softball coaching experience, including serving as the head coach of the Hampton University Lady Pirates from 2008-2010. During her time at Hampton, the Lady Pirates went 78-79 while competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in NCAA Division I.

CSM Increases Minimum Wage to $15 an Hour

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has raised its minimum wage from $12 an hour for all fully benefited and part-time hourly staff members to $15 an hour. The CSM Board of Trustee’s voted unanimously at its Sept. 23 board meeting to formalize the salary structure confirming it effective as of July 1, 2021.

The nursing students selected for this honor earned Bs or better in all of their nursing courses without repeating the courses and they completed a scholarly project related to the advancement of nursing as a profession.

CSM Velocity Center Joins Town of Indian Head’s 101st Anniversary Festivities Sept. 25, Showcases ‘Art of Innovation’ With Activities and Fun

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is joining in the day-long festivities to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the Town of Indian Head Sept. 25 by hosting the “Art of Innovation” at the CSM Velocity Center. The public is invited to visit the Velocity Center throughout the day to enjoy an art exhibit, musical improvisation, games of giant Jenga, face painting and see presentations highlighting innovative technologies including robotics, 3-D printing and prototypes. Visitors will also have the chance to learn about the accomplishments of the Talons, CSM’s nationally ranked robotics team, and meet members of CSM’s Society of Women Engineers and National Society of Black Engineers.

CSM Recognizes 36 Allied Health Students for Certifying as Medical Coders, Medical Assistants and Paramedics

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) celebrated 36 CSM graduates who became certified as Medical Coding Specialists, Medical Assistants or EMS-Paramedics during an Allied Health Career Recognition Ceremony Aug. 19. All of the students were recognized by attendees of the online ceremony as “hometown heroes” and for graduating in one of college’s Allied Health programs that were ranked 29th nationally six months ago.

CSM Foundation’s 30th Annual Golf Classic Raises Over $80,000 for Student Success

The 30th annual College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation Golf Classic presented by Marrick Homes returned to the links this month and raised more than $82,000 for student success and athletic programs at CSM. The Aug. 12th event held at Swan Point Country Club in Issue, Md., saw nearly 200 players tackle the sweltering heat for a day of golf, fellowship, prizes, a sip and swing and networking.

The Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, today announced its new executive officers and welcomed several new board of directors, including College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Associate Vice President of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Ellen Flowers-Fields. Flowers-Fields was appointed to TEDCO by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan in May.

CSM Named 15th Best Community College in the Nation; Earns Top Spot as Best in Maryland

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) again received top national and regional ratings from personal finance gurus WalletHub for providing students with affordable and accessible education while maintaining good teacher-student ratio and transfer opportunities. Maryland’s 16 community colleges ranked fourth best overall in the nation with CSM ranking best in the state and landing in the number 15 spot out of 685 community colleges in the country – moving up from the 51st position in 2020.

CSM To Require Indoor Masking for Fall Semester in Response to Rising Number of COVID-19 Cases in Region

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announces it is postponing its transition to Phase 4: Normal Operations and will remain in Phase 3: Reduced Operations in response to the rising number of COVID-19 cases and increased positivity rates in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. This delayed shift in operations means faculty, staff and students will be required to wear masks indoors on all campuses at all times, effective immediately.

Farming 4 Hunger’s Market Garden Demonstration Takes Root at CSM’s Prince Frederick Campus

A partnership between the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Farming 4 Hunger (F4H) is growing – a new market garden demonstration, that is – at CSM’s Prince Frederick Campus. The garden will provide a “’planting of the seed’ to harvest” experience that provides food for the region’s hungry and teachable moments in self-sufficiency, team building, service leadership, volunteerism and finding purpose.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announces it has millions of dollars in scholarships and COVID-19 relief funds available this Fall Semester to assist anyone who wants to attend CSM full-time or part-time in a degree pathway or for a workforce development certificate. The scholarships and financial assistance can be used for tuition, college expenses and living expenses and is available to new and existing students, or former CSM students who want to return or have had restrictions on their accounts related to past debt.

Two Southern Maryland nonprofit organizations are crediting the Nonprofit Institute (NPI) at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) for not only saving their businesses over the course of the past 17 months, but for also strengthening their organizations to better serve their communities. Spokespersons from both The Arc Southern Maryland in Prince Frederick and Pure Play Every Day in Charles County recently told “Inside Your County Government” podcast host Brent Huber that NPI at CSM is “the backbone of success” for many of the area’s nonprofits.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Vice President of Financial Services Tony Jernigan has announced his decision to retire June 30 after 12 years of dedicated service to CSM and its students. Frederick ‘Rick’ Johnson, retired chief financial officer from Harford Community College, will serve as interim vice president of CSM’s Financial Services effective July 1.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announced that Dr. Rodney Redmond has been named vice president of the college’s new Division of Learning and CSM’s first provost. Redmond had been serving in the role as CSM’s interim vice president of Academic Affairs since January 2021, as part of a unique cross-college transfer between CSM and Montgomery College (MC), where Redmond served as the College-wide Dean of English and Reading.
