Steps to Enroll for Incoming Transfer Students
1. Apply to CSM
Submit your Application
Providing your Social Security Number is optional at the time of applying to the college but will be required to complete the registration process and to apply for financial assistance. You may be asked to provide proof of residency in person at a campus location.
2. Request an Official Transcript Evaluation
To initiate the evaluation process, students must submit both their official transcript(s) AND the Transcript Evaluation Request Form. Requests for transcript evaluations will not be considered complete until CSM receives both the official transcript AND the Transcript Evaluation Request Form. All physical transcripts must be in the original sealed envelope issued by the sending institution and all electronic transcripts must be sent directly to the Registrar’s Office via a secure electronic delivery system. Have your transcripts sent using a method listed below.
If the student is submitting multiple transcripts, they will be reviewed in the order they are received. The student will only need to submit one transcript evaluation request form (noting all the transcripts on the same submission under the question "List the names of the college institutions you will be listing official transcripts from").
Please Note: If you are a Visiting Student, an official transcript and request form are not required. For assistance with registering, please schedule to meet with an academic advisor with your unofficial transcript(s) at 301-934-7574 or advisor@csmd.edu.
Submit the Request Form
Step 3: Evaluation
Once the official transcript and the Transcript Evaluation Request Form have been received, the evaluation process will begin. This process can take up to 20 business days.
The maximum number of transfer credits will be transferred into CSM. If the student has taken more credits than they are eligible to have transfer into CSM (75% of the credits required for the Letter of Recognition, Certificate, and/or Associate's degree), priority when evaluating courses will be given to courses that apply to the program of study listed on the Transcript Evaluation Request Form.
Please Note: Students can view how courses will transfer to CSM through the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) TES is an interactive tool that will allow you to compare course descriptions and view classes that have been previously evaluated by our academic departments. If you cannot find a course, it just means we have not evaluated it yet. To help expedite the evaluation process, please submit course syllabi to transeval@csmd.edu for the courses not listed in TES.

Step 4: Meet with an Advisor
The evaluation process can take up to 20 business days. While you wait, please schedule to meet with an academic advisor. Each CSM Advising Office maintains its own appointment and student walk-in schedule. Click here to contact the campus most convenient to you.
If you want to register for courses while you are waiting for your official transcript evaluation to be completed, you may meet with an academic advisor to explore the option of requesting a pre-requisite waiver. Their office can be reached at 301-934-7574 (when prompted, press 1) or at advisor@csmd.edu.
Step 5: Report
Once your transcript evaluation is complete, you will receive confirmation via email and instructions on how to log in to your my.CSMD account and track your progress.
The Transfer Summary will show you whether or not your courses have transferred in. If the course was denied in transfer, you will see a "grade." This "grade" will tell you the reason the course did not transfer in. To identify the reasoning behind the denial, please use the following key:
TD0 - Program Requirement Already Fulfilled
TD1 - Not Applicable to Program
TD2 - Unique Discipline or Course
TD3 - Does Not Meet Objectives/hrs
TD4 - Developmental Course
TD5 - Graduate Level Course
TD6 - Institution Not Accredited
TD7 - Unsatisfactory Grade
TD8 - Course in Progress
TD9 - Received Credit at Another Institution
TDP – Transcript Evaluation Pending
TDN - Request to Not Evaluate
TDT - Credit Through Testing
TDL - Credit Limit Reached
As well, you may see a course where instead of listing a number, it says "GENR." This means that while the course is not equivalent to a course offered at the College of Southern Maryland, it is considered a general education course and it can be used to fulfill a corresponding open general education requirement.
There may be exceptional instances in which students are excused from taking a required course in their program of study. A course substitution is initiated by an advisor and approved by the Division of Learning. Please schedule to meet with an advisor to initiate this process.
