Spring Events, from STEAM to Jazz, are in Full Bloom in CSM in April

Juried Student Exhibition. Through Friday, May 2. Awards reception Thursday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. The Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition is a selected collection of artworks created by current CSM students. Microsoft Teams Training for Veterans and Their Dependents. Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m. Room 158, Francis P. Cyber Escape Room Challenge. Friday, April 4 at 9:30 a.m. Online, and in person at the Velocity Center at 4465 Indian Head Highway in Indian Head; and Propel Labs at SMCC Building 8, 20501 Seneca Meadows Parkway in Germantown. Raise your cybersecurity awareness through this fun virtual escape room challenge. Teams of two to three participants will compete to win cash prizes up to $3,000. Free. 20th Annual JazzFest. April 4 and 5, 7:30 p.m. each evening. Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. CSM presents a jazz festival every spring featuring ensembles consisting of both community and student members. This year’s concerts include:  

  • The Randy Runyon Project. Friday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata.   • 20th Annual JazzFest: Charles County Public Schools All County Jazz Band, and CSM's Solid Brass Big Band, featuring world-renowned saxophonist Eric Marienthal. Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. This concert features Charles County Public Schools All County Jazz Band and CSM's Solid Brass Big Band, featuring world-renowned saxophonist Eric Marienthal. Connections Literary Series: Enzo Silon Surin. Wednesday, April 9 at 1 p.m. Building B, Multipurpose Rooms (Rooms 103/104/105), Prince Frederick Campus at 115 Williams Road in Prince Frederick. Join CSM for an afternoon lunch, talk, and reading with award-winning poet, educator, and social advocate Enzo Silon Surin. Surin is the founding editor and publisher of Central Square Press and the author of "American Scapegoat," a thought-provoking exploration of societal conflict and identity in America, and "When My Body Was a Clinched Fist," which won the 21st annual Massachusetts Book Award and explores themes of trauma, resilience, and the Black youth experience in America. As a Haitian-born immigrant and Black poet who was displaced at the age of nine, Surin’s work examines the intersections of race, identity, and social justice. He currently serves as a visiting instructor in creative writing poetry at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The 15th Annual Nonprofit Institute Conference. Thursday, April 10 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Center for Business and Industry (BI Building), 113/113E, La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. Join CSM for this annual convening for nonprofits in Southern Maryland. This year’s theme is “Nonprofits Built for Success through Access, Momentum, and Mobility,” and the conference will feature networking, breakout sessions, and other activities to help nonprofit leaders advance their unique missions.  $65 per attendee; registration closes on April 7. Art of Innovation STEAM Festival. Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Velocity Center at 4465 Indian Head Highway in Indian Head. Join CSM for a free family-friendly event celebrating science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) with hands-on experiences, interactive exhibits, and innovative demonstrations! See cutting-edge robots in action, explore mobile technology hubs featuring high-tech fabrication tools, enjoy live performances and panel discussions, and more. Free. Ward Virts Concert Series: Junwen Liang, Piano. Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. Building B, Room 103/104/105, Prince Frederick Campus at 115 Williams Road in Prince Frederick. Join CSM for a performance by pianist Junwen Liang, who has been described as "a very gifted pianist and a musician of great sensitivity." He has won numerous awards and competitions, starting in his youth in China and throughout the United States and Europe. MD Department of Labor Info Session for Military-Connected Students. Wednesday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Building C, Leonardtown Campus at Leonardtown Campus at 22950 Hollywood Road in Leonardtown. 4th Annual Latino Fest: Environmental and Migrant Justice: Colombian Perspective - Acuerdo Humanitario Ya! Thursday, April 24 from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. Campus Center (CC Building), Room 100, La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. Enjoy music from the Verny Varela Band, be inspired by the documentary “Acuerdo Humanitario Ya!,” and gain insight from a panel discussion featuring activists working social justice and human rights as they relate to the immigrant experience. Music Student Honors Recital. Wednesday, April 30 at 3 p.m. Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. These recitals showcase student performers who have taken private instruction. Faculty members who teach private lessons will nominate students in their studios to perform in the recital. Students will present a variety of instrumental and vocal performances ranging in style from classical to jazz and popular music. Latin Ensemble Concert: 'Música Caliente.' Wednesday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road in La Plata. CSM’s Ritmo Caché Latin Ensemble will perform a program of a variety of Latin-American styles including salsa, cha-cha-chá, Tejano, Latin jazz, and Latin pop. The ensemble includes students in the music program as well as members of the community who share a love of Latin-American music.
