CSM Theater Presents “How I Learned to Drive” by Paula Vogel, directed by Suzanne Donohue. A wildly funny, surprising, and devastating tale of survival as seen through the lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl and an older man. Night of Engineering: Southern Maryland Entry Program. March 23. 6:30-8 p.m. Leonardtown Campus, Building A, Auditorium and Online via Zoom. Learn more about the seamless pathway to a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering offered through CSM in partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD). Upon completing the engineering program at CSM, students may transfer with junior status to earn an engineering degree at UMD. Students can also do an internship with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, a division of NAVAIR, with a possible employment opportunity upon successful graduation and completion of all Pathway Program requirements. A Conversation with Author Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai. March 29. 1-3 p.m. La Plata Campus, CE Building Room 101 and Virtual via Zoom. Vietnamese author Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai will read from and discuss her second novel, “Dust Child,” a suspenseful and moving saga about family secrets, hidden trauma, and the overriding power of forgiveness, set during the war and in present-day  Việt Nam. The novel weaves us into the lives, past and present, of the ostracized, mixed-race children of American soldiers; their mothers compelled by war into prostitution, and their fathers, the G.I.’s who abandoned them and yet remained haunted by them. Born and raised in Việt Nam, Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai is the author of the international bestseller “The Mountains Sing,” which was the runner-up for the 2021 Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and the winner of the 2020 BookBrowse Best Debut Award, the 2021 International Book Awards, the 2021 PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award, and the 2020 Lannan Literary Award Fellowship for Fiction. Latino Educational Panel and Festival. March 29. 2-4 p.m. Leonardtown Campus, Building A, Auditorium. The College of Southern Maryland’s Global Initiatives Committee presents an afternoon of events will include music, conversation, and a reception. CSM’s Latin ensemble will perform at 2 p.m., followed by a panel discussion on “Intercultural Tales: Learning with Baltimore’s Immigrant Communities” with panelists Dr Tania Lizarazo and Dr Thania Muñoz D. of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. They will share their work on this digital storytelling project that showcases immigration stories in Maryland. The moderators will be Dr David M. Walker, Professor of Geography, College of Southern Maryland, and Dr Ximena Postigo, Professor of Latino Studies, St Mary's College of Maryland. Velocity X: Climate Innovation Hackathon. March 30-31. 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The Velocity Center at Indian Head and virtually. The College of Southern Maryland (CSM), in partnership with Ensemble Consultancy and Brightidea, will hold a hybrid (virtual and in-person) climate innovation hackathon. Invent, design, and test new solutions surrounding the impact of climate change. Join us and transform community climate problems into problem-solving opportunities! In collaboration with the Charles County Government, teams will be able to solve one of two challenges that address climate change issues: 1. Data Visualization Challenge and 2. Marketing Strategy Challenge. Enter, build, and design solutions for either challenge for a shot at prize money from a $12,000 pool. CSM Theater Production: 'Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wood)'. March 31, April 1, and April 7, 7:30 p.m. April 2 and 8, 3 p.m. La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater. Roald Dahl’s much-loved story follows the vain attempts of three farmers, Boggis, Bunce, and Bean, one fat, one short, and one lean, to get rid of the fox who regularly steals food from their farms. “Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wood)” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
