CSM Class of 2024, Medical Assisting
My passion for healthcare began during my junior year of high school when I enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) certification class. I found fulfillment in helping those in need and forming genuine connections with the residents and patients I served. I pursued this career until I experienced the loss of a resident with whom I had developed a close bond. Despite this challenge, I felt an undeniable pull back to the medical field as I realized that it was my true calling.
Over the years, I worked in several radiology clinics and later in a pediatric office. However, after becoming pregnant with my second child, I transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom. Fast forward eight years—my CNA/GNA certification had expired, and I found myself holding an associate degree in psychology that did not offer viable career opportunities. Recognizing the need to regain my footing in healthcare, I decided to advance my career beyond my previous experience by pursuing my Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification.
In the spring of 2023, I enrolled at CSM after relocating from Anne Arundel County. Initially, I was apprehensive about returning to school at my age, but I understood that this was essential for my family’s financial stability and my personal future. I found the faculty at CSM to be incredibly supportive and accommodating of family situations that came up. The flexibility in scheduling allowed me to balance my academic responsibilities with my home life, and I was able to complete the program in a relatively short time.
In addition to the excellent support from my professors, I formed lasting friendships with my classmates. It has been invaluable to connect with others who are navigating similar paths in the healthcare field, sharing both the challenges and victories we encounter.
As I reflect on my journey and the completion of my program, I am optimistic about the future that lies ahead, not only for myself but also for my family. I am profoundly grateful for the assistance provided by the staff at CSM, including the advisors who guided me throughout my studies. Their support was instrumental in my success.
For anyone considering the medical assistant program, I wholeheartedly encourage you to pursue it. You will join a community dedicated to fostering your growth and empowering you to achieve success in a career you are passionate about.
