Join a “Big Conversation” on the Racial Wealth Gap Jan. 28

We constantly hear the phrase “wealth gap” in the media, but its definition is not often explained. What is it? Why is it important to the health of our nation and our local community?

Join The Big Conversation Partners in Dismantling Racism and Privilege in Southern Maryland to learn the answers to these and other questions at “The Racial Wealth Gap: Rooted in Land and Home Ownership” on Sunday, Jan. 28.  The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is a community partner for the event.

“We are proud to partner with The Big Conversation and other organizations in our community to host these important conversations and empower attendees to make positive change in our community,” said CSM Associate Vice President of Human Resources and Director of the Organizational Development and Learning Institute Dr. Trenace Richardson.  “Understanding the problems that we face and holding an honest dialogue about them is the first step to addressing these deep-rooted issues.”

The event will begin with a panel presentation featuring experts on the topic. Attendees will learn more about how the wealth gap affects lives, how land and home ownership play a role, how the gap started, and how local systems and policies perpetuate it.

Following the discussion, participants will break into small, facilitated groups to share what they learned, discuss the causes and the impact of the wealth gap on individuals and their families, and discover solutions for how our community can better address home and land ownership in Southern Maryland.

The event will take place on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 2-5 p.m. at Middleham & St. Peter's Parish in Lusby, with a snow date of Sun. Feb. 4.  Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Register at https://calvertlibrary.libnet.info/event/9681588#branch
