The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) continues its week of activities celebrating the approaching March 28 inauguration of CSM’s sixth president, President Dr. Yolanda Wilson with events that highlight the president’s commitment to students, partnerships, inclusion, civic engagement, and service leadership.

“Dear to me, as your CSM president, is that we remain steadfast in our focus on ‘community, collaboration and culture’ and the premise that we will ‘go far, only when we go together,” Wilson told those gathered today at a Servant Leadership Panel sponsored by the Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. Center for Leadership, the Nonprofit Institute at CSM and the CSM Foundation. The panel discussion kicked off CSM’s inaugural Day of Service that has CSM faculty, staff, and students volunteering at nonprofit organizations in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties throughout the day to give back to “the community that has given so generously to CSM.”dr-wilson-2024-headshot-final.jpg

“I believe strongly that volunteering creates opportunities for collaboration and networking, skill-building, leadership development, and establishing important social bonds,” shared Wilson, pictured right.

Participants on the Service Leadership panel included community leaders Executive Director of the Poiema Movement Tiffany Barber ’00; Charles County Charitable Trust Executive Director Christie Burnett; CSM Foundation Board of Directors and SMECO Director of Government Affairs and Community Relations Natalie Cotton ’10; Farming 4 Hunger President Bernie Fowler, Jr., Executive Director,; Dr. David Hupp ’07, Quality Improvement Team Leader, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and volunteer firefighter and EMT with Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department; Jim Malloy, President and CEO, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington.

Today is day four of five days of inauguration activities that culminate in Wilson’s investiture tomorrow as the sixth president of the College of Southern Maryland.

As part of the week’s events, CSM offered gratitude to its donors and partners at a dinner reception sponsored by the Student Government Association and the CSM Foundation March 22.

On March 25, CSM opened its campus doors and invited the public to come into the college’s hallways and classrooms, as well as visit robotic demonstrations and state-of-the-art cyber labs, in order to tour the ‘community’s college.' Faculty and staff joined to learn the Cha Cha and a free and lively Latin Ensemble Concert was offered to the public that evening.

Students, staff, faculty and the community participated in three interactive events and student discussion panels March 26 that centered around student's real-life experiences to highlight CSM’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and accessibility.
