Stella's Girls
Educate. Empower. Lead.
As a social entrepreneur and active duty Marine Corp spouse, Kaprece James founded Stella's Girls to shape the women leaders of tomorrow. The mission is to educate and empower low-income girls and young women to become leaders, social change agents, and advocates in their communities. This nonprofit's vision is to develop confident female leaders and equip them with the tools to lead organizations, businesses, schools, and their communities.
"Since the Founding of Stella's Girls in 2016, the impact in girls and women lives in seven countries and three continents is beyond what I could have ever imagined. Our work is super critical in the communities we serve because in many of the communities we are the only resource providing women and girls with access to school, leadership programs, menstrual hygiene items, and a voice to be heard. Since our expansion to Southern Maryland in 2019, our organization has taken a turn to where teenage girls run many of our programs and are truly excited about serving their local communities and having the opportunity to serve as advocates and peer mentors," said James.
In Maryland, the current programs include peer mentoring, coding courses taught by Deloitte, a cultural immersion program, free tutoring, community service projects, and advocacy engagement. Stella's Girls also distributes menstrual hygiene items and STEAM kits throughout the region. During the summer of 2021, they will host a few hackathons and opportunities for youth to earn school credits and are always looking for both student and adult volunteers as well as potential partners and outreach opportunities.
The pandemic was difficult for everyone, but Stella's Girls had a profound impact on many young women, helping them grow and learn despite the myriad challenges. The following are recent testimonials:
"My daughter was able to achieve a 3.9 GPA during the pandemic thanks to her Stella's Girls tutor."
--Parent of young woman in Maryland served by Stella's Girls
"Having a mentor during the pandemic has provided me with a trusted adult that I could talk about my mental health, schoolwork, and family without being judged. My mentor was truly a blessing during this pandemic."
