Nonprofit Spotlight
Spring Dell Center is a nonprofit that has been dedicated to fostering independence and community inclusion for the past 56 years. The organization connects people with disabilities to the community and employment opportunities so they can achieve their highest level of independence. It pursues this mission with the end goal of creating an inclusive community for all people. Spring Dell Center does this by providing comprehensive programs that equip participants with the skills and support they need to live fulfilling lives. Since each participant has different needs and aspirations, the nonprofit’s programs take a personalized approach and offer a wide range of services.
For example, Spring Dell Center offers independent living skills development programs so individuals can navigate daily life, foster self-sufficiency, and gain a sense of accomplishment. The nonprofit offers vocational training and supported employment opportunity programs. These programs bridge the gap between skill development and real-world application so individuals can meaningfully contribute to the workforce. The organization’s community engagement and social inclusion programs also facilitate the ability of individuals to participate in community activities. This gives participants the chance to socially interact with others and feel a sense of belonging.
A major community engagement and social inclusion program that Spring Dell Center holds is the “Re-Building a Healthier You” program. It provides support groups that focus on peer support, cooking demonstrations, healthy eating, and exercise classes. Over the next 12 months, four cohorts will enroll in the program, with each participating in it for three months. Each cohort will attend a graduation ceremony and receive certificates of accomplishment and medals upon completing the program.
The public can help Spring Dell Center achieve its mission by donating, volunteering, thrifting, and more. The nonprofit’s website contains a form where people can give a monetary amount of their choice by using PayPal or making an offline donation. Spring Dell Center also provides a variety of volunteering tasks. Examples include helping with carrying out the day program, assisting with administrative office tasks, transporting individuals to and from locations, and doing residential service work. Additionally, people can shop at or donate items to Hooks & Hangers in La Plata or Hooks & Hangers II in Charlotte Hall.
Spring Dell Center will be holding two events in the near future. The nonprofit will hold a dine out event at Chipotle in La Plata on July 16 from 4 - 8 p.m. The organization will also hold its 31st annual live and silent auction on November 22, which members of the public can sponsor or attend.
