CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we’ll be sharing tips and tools you can use to protect yourself and the college community from cyberattacks.
Cybersecurity Tip: Multi-Factor Authentication
What’s even better than a strong password? A password for your password. Multi-factor authentication (MFA)—sometimes two-factor or two-step—is an extra layer of protection for your accounts that requires anyone trying to log in as you to prove that they really are you. Typically, this takes the form of another, separate form of identity verification, such as a fingerprint, a code from a text message, or confirming your login attempt through a mobile app.
So why go through all this? Because multi-factor authentication makes it extremely hard for hackers to access your online accounts. Even if they know your password, they (hopefully) don’t have your mobile device, fingerprints, or retina. Once you set up MFA, proving your identity usually adds just a second or two to the login process, and the peace of mind is well worth it.
CSM requires MFA to log in to Microsoft O365, and we strongly recommend that you implement MFA for any of your personal accounts that provide it, especially those associated with work, school, email, banking, and social media. When it comes to your data and your digital life, more protection is better.
ENTER THE CYBERSECURITY POSTER CONTEST BY OCT. 18
Promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness throughout our college community by designing a poster around one of these four themes: multifactor authentication (MFA); password security; software updates; or recognizing and reporting phishing. The winning poster design will be displayed on all campuses, CSM social media, and HawkTalk. Submit your design by Oct. 18!
