Real Students, Real stories: IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Real Students, Real Stories

THIS WEEK HEAR FROM:

Kayla Carlyle
Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program

"I am a bit of an explorer in my pursuit of happiness, success, and education, and I’ve discovered the meaning and importance of being passionate about what you do: I’m a volunteer EMT, I work as a veterinary technician, and I’m preparing for a career in clinical laboratory science with CSM’s Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program under Professor Tiffany Gill.

I have been fortunate to be able to take what I’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in my work. Since I have a foot in both worlds, human medicine and veterinary medicine, I’ve been inspired to use what I’ve learned about blood banking and transfusion to help to start an animal blood blank to bring safer blood transfusions to pets.

Without my program and CSM, I don’t think I would ever have discovered my passion for laboratory science. I’ve decided to transfer to George Washington University to earn my bachelor’s after I complete my associate degree, as the next step to attending medical school to become a pathologist."

STUDENT RESOURCES

CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH: PRIVACY

Privacy in our digital world is all about trying to limit what information is collected about you and protecting your sensitive personal data. Short of going off the grid, it’s practically impossible to sweep away your digital footprint, but there are steps you can take to reduce it:

  • Don’t Overshare: Limit what you post and share, even if you think it’s a secure space.
  • Read the Fine Print: Check the privacy policy for sites and apps to see what they collect. If it seems sketchy, don’t use it!
  • No Such Thing as a Free App: Regardless of privacy options, information is always being collected, especially with “free” services. They make their money by selling your data; you’re not the customer, you’re the product.
  • Practice Safe Tech: To browse anonymously, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and/or a browser designed for privacy.

CSM College Survival Guide

At CSM, no hawk has to fly alone. The College Survival Guide is a recurring feature that directs members of the CSM community to free resources and support for whatever challenges they may be facing.

FEELING OVERWHELMED? It’s okay if you’re not feeling okay. Whatever’s affecting you, CSM Counseling Services are available to accompany and support you in a wide range of emotional and mental health areas. If you’re not ready to talk about it yet, you can also use “r u ok, Hawks?” – an anonymous tool to connect you with resources to support your mental health.
