"This is my first official semester as a full-time student—and a student who’s actually studying something she wants to do!
After I graduated high school in 2016, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Like some people who don’t know what to do, I took a gap year (maybe more like a gap month) to just work and think about what was next for me.
Quickly I realized I didn’t want to work just anywhere and do just anything, so I registered for one single class in 2017. It was a math class… that I didn’t pass… and to top it off, it was a prerequisite, so I immediately felt unintelligent.
Then disaster struck in my world and I lost my best friend, my brother Hiram.
From 2017 to 2019, I kept registering for classes and immediately dropping them. I was studying things other people told me to and not actually taking the time to mourn and really think about where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do in my life.
It wasn’t until I turned 22 that I started to really think about me and put myself first. That’s exactly what I did, and I couldn’t be more proud of myself or happier. I figured out more about myself, what I can do, what I’m passionate about and how strong I am mentally and physically.
It doesn’t matter how old you are or how “late” you think it is. College is always there for you when you’re ready. Here’s to my first official freshman year as an early childhood education major! Yes, that’s right, I’m going to be a teacher! I’ve been dreaming this dream since I was a little girl, and it’s about to come true."
