Mallows Bay Ghost Fleet in Southern Maryland
Host: Tatiana Vrem, trvrem@csmd.edu
Elena Gilroy, Operational Manager Mallows Bay St. Charles County, will discuss the Mallows’ Bay Ghost Fleet of the Potomac. Mallows Bay is now the most prominent feature of the new Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, the first national marine sanctuary within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
The Mallows Bay Potomac River Marine Sanctuary protects the remnants of more than 100 World War I-era wooden steamships known as the Ghost Fleet. The Ghost Fleet is the gateway to recreation and educational opportunities. Mallows Bay also has a rich heritage of commercial fishing, the military, the Piscataway Indian Nation the Piscataway Convoy Tribe of Maryland, and the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia. Mallows Bay is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and listed as a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is a part of the Southern Maryland National Heritage Area. There are volunteer networks, citizen science, and advisory councils to learn about the sanctuary and promote the stewardship of its resources.
