What A Riot! Collective Histories, Direct Action, and Radical Collaboration
Host - Jennifer Fossell (she/her) | jefossell@csmd.edu
This event will delve into the history and current struggles of the transgender community. The general topic of the talk will be on the increasing spate of anti-trans legislation and rhetoric as viewed within the context of earlier transgender history and struggles.
Keynote Address - Dr. Ardel Haefele-Thomas (they/them)
From the speaker: “I will be looking at current disturbing anti drag show and anti trans policies that are sweeping several states in the US, but I am also going to look historically at the riots and sit ins carried out by "gender nonconforming" people in the 1960's who were literally breaking the law by being themselves out in public. Of course, we face that danger yet again. I think it is really important to know the past history and the people who fought for where we are now - and then of course to discuss what we can do now and the dangers of slipping back 60 years.”
