Gretchen Schermerhorn: Perception
January 25 - March 8
Artist Reception: February 15 | 2:30 p.m.
Perception’s artworks are inspired by images and text found in 80-year-old encyclopedias belonging to Schermerhorn’s family members. Many of the 'facts' in these books are now refuted and makes the artist wonder what will be considered ludicrous, inaccurate and outdated in 100 years. The exhibition addresses a pessimistic meta induction theory; if past successful scientific theories are found to be false, there is no reason to believe our current successful theories are approximately true.
Her work forces multiple images together into the same composition, illustrating our relationship with the natural world as both competitive and destructive.
Gretchen Schermerhorn is currently the Artistic Director at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, an art center dedicated to the contemporary creation of hand printmaking, papermaking, and the art of the book, in Hyattsville, Maryland.
