The College of Southern Maryland's second annual Art of Innovation STEAM Festival. Families come together for a day of discovery and explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM), in partnership the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division and with Brightidea, implemented a hybrid (virtual and in-person) AI hackathon. Participants were challenged to create and fine-tune an image classification model that can detect and identify images from a given dataset. The goal of the challenge was to demonstrate key concepts such as data preprocessing, model architect design, and training techniques that can be transferable to military applications that involve the need for image classification.
Teams engaged collaboratively in the problem-solving opportunity from the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division to create an Image Classifier that would be able to detect and identify an aircraft!
This competition seeks to create an iconic exhibit/installation/project that will communicate the theme "Innovation and Technology" and promote the work of the Energetics Technology Center (ETC) and the Velocity Center, a place of innovation, learning, and collaboration for academia and the community.
Watch the video below for an insightful talk by Matt Scassero, the director of operations and outreach at the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering MATRIX Lab at University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland.
He discusses the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence and autonomy in various domains. Learn how these technologies are transforming our lives as well as what ethical, legal, and technical issues they raise.
