Thanks to a recently awarded $490,000 grant from the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland to the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), students are learning that the answer to food insecurity could be to grow crops up instead of out – and vertically instead of horizontally.
Award-winning pianist Brian Ganz returns to College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Prince Frederick Campus Feb. 8 to perform for the 20th year in the Ward Virts Concert Series.
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) celebrated 50 nursing graduates at the La Plata Campus last week with a time-honored pinning ceremony that allows CSM faculty to welcome their students as peers and colleagues in the field of nursing.
College of Southern Maryland (CSM) students who have chosen to pursue careers in health care were lauded and celebrated Jan. 16 during the college’s Health Career Readiness Recognition in La Plata. Ninety-six students were recognized for completing programs to become certified nursing assistants, geriatric nursing assistants, dental assistants, phlebotomy technicians, certified clinical medical assistants, paramedics, certified nutrition coaches, and certified personal trainers.
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will close for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 and will resume normal operating hours Jan. 21 when the college welcomes back its CSM Hawks to the first day of the Spring semester. The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has released its dean’s list for the 2024 fall session. Students who have earned 12 or more credits at CSM are eligible to be considered for the dean’s list. At the end of the fall, spring, and summer sessions, full- and part-time time students who have completed at least six credits during the semester and have earned a term grade point average of 3.5 or better will be included in the dean’s list. College of Southern Maryland (CSM) alumna Laura Lopez McNulty’s (‘24) spent much of her last three years at CSM eloquently lifting her voice with elected officials to share how community college students benefit from expanding access to education; creating support systems to bolster a learner’s momentum; and, building partnerships that ensure economic and social mobility. For her tireless and dedicated support of all students, McNulty was recognized as the 2024 Student Advocate of the Year by the National Institute for Lobbying and Ethics and the Cornerstone Government Affairs Group.
Supporters of College of Southern Maryland (CSM) dug deep on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3, and donated more money than ever before. Nearly 300 donors provided $184,186 in funds to help with student success initiatives.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director Wynne Briscoe was recognized Nov. 14 as one of the state’s Manufacturing Stars for 2024. As the Maryland statewide subject matter expert for manufacturing for the Maryland Small Business Development Center, Briscoe “has been an integral part to making the center’s technology team one of the most innovative in the country.”

Through tears, laughter, and rounds of proud applause – friends and families joined at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) La Plata Campus Wednesday evening Nov. 6 to recognize and celebrate 22 adult students for overcoming personal obstacles to earn their high school diplomas.
Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs & Military Families Secretary Anthony Woods visited the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Nov. 4 to help celebrate veterans across all CSM campuses. Woods toured CSM’s Center for Health Sciences at the Regional Hughesville Campus along with Charlotte Hall Veterans Home Administrator Sonia Bailey-Gibson and following the tour, he joined CSM leadership, student veterans, faculty and staff for a luncheon at the La Plata Campus.
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) just released its spring schedule of Community Education courses, and all are invited to kick off the new year of 2025 by exploring opportunities to upgrade job skills, pursue a new or different career, start a small business, or explore personal enrichment activities. This spring’s course offerings are called “Cuisine, Culture, and Connections,” with classes on food and drink, languages, travel, history, and culture - to name a few.
The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announces that Dr. Molly O’Keefe will join the college Dec. 2 as its new associate vice president of Strategy. In this senior leadership role, O’Keefe will be responsible for guiding the implementation of CSM’s new 2024-2029 Strategic Plan: “Built for Success” -- a plan that is the result of extensive community engagement and reflects CSM’s dedication to expanding access, enhancing momentum, and fostering social and economic mobility for students.
